WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?
A concussion is a type of a traumatic brain injury--or TBI--caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skill, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells.
BASELINE CONCUSSION TESTING
What is baseline concussion testing? Baseline concussion testing is a pre-season examination that assess an athlete's brain function and balance. This includes learning and memory skills and the ability to pay attention or concentrate. Baseline concussion testing helps athletic trainers and other health care professionals make comparisons through post injury testing and is used as an aide in determining when the athlete can safely begin the return to play protocol.
